Shuttle launches on STS-128 mission to the ISS

Space shuttle Discovery, with its seven-member crew, launched at 0359 UTC on 29 August 2009 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shuttle will deliver supplies, equipment and a new crew member to the International Space Station.

India loses contact with its moon probe

Radio contact with India’s Chandrayaan-1 moon probe was abruptly lost at 2000 UTC on 28 August 2009. “Detailed review of the Telemetry data received from the spacecraft is in progress and health of the spacecraft subsystems is being analysed,” ISRO said in a terse statement.

MRO in safe mode for the fourth time this year

Engineers for NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) project have stepped up the communication rate being received from the orbiter as an early step in the process of determining why the spacecraft spontaneously rebooted its computer on 26 August, 1242 UTC.

Bookish Americans all over the country are used to Ira Glass tricking them into crying in public. As the host of public radio’s This American Life, Glass frequently blindsides his listening audience with stories that are as heartbreaking as they are heartwarming. This is no Lifetime Television movie style sadness, though, and the voices on the radio aren’t characters: they’re real people whose stories allow you to experience a poignant blend of empathy despite the fact that they’re strangers. Perhaps that’s why the show is called This American Life.

TV For Nerds – Discover Science and Learning

For many years, the only association with the word “nerd” was a negative one. You know, pocket protectors, goofy shirts, glasses with tape on them, and a lack of social skills. But the nerd of old has all but disappeared, not unlike the buffalo or passenger pigeon. It was one a huge part of America, and now it’s got to go. Who even knows what a pocket protector was, anyway?
