In a true example of how life can imitate art, especially when it comes to futurism, Arthur C. Clarke, author of the modern classic “2001, A Space Odyssey,” might not have even known the visionary quality of his own statement in the article “Extraterrestrial Relays.” Published in 1945, the article detailed plans for putting three ’space platforms’ into orbit above the Earth’s equator. The result would be worldwide communications achieved by bouncing signals off these space platforms.

Although not everyone may see it as a bad thing, researchers from the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence organization or SETI claim that current human technology is likely blocking our detection from other intelligent life out there in space. According to founder Dr. Drake, intelligent life definitely exists out there, but without a way to make ourselves detectable once more it’s highly unlikely they’ll ever find us. What, exactly, is to blame for this recent downshift in Earth’s potential detection? According to Drake the culprits are modern digital technologies like satellite TV and even cable.
