NASA engineers conducted a 550-second test of the new J-2X rocket engine at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi on 13 July. The J-2X engine will power the upper-stage of a planned two-stage Space Launch System, or SLS. The SLS will launch NASA’s Orion spacecraft and other payloads.

NASA Space Technology Program researchers will launch and deploy a large inflatable heat shield aboard a rocket travelling at hypersonic speeds this weekend during a technology demonstration test from the agency’s Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Virginia.

NASA has selected United Launch Services LLC to launch the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP), Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) and Joint Polar Satellite System-1 (JPSS-1) spacecraft. The spacecraft will launch in October 2014, July 2014 and November 2016, respectively, aboard Delta II rockets from Vandenberg Air Force Base. NASA has selected six proposals to improve the affordability, reliability and performance of an advanced booster for the Space Launch System (SLS). The awardees will develop engineering demonstrations and risk reduction concepts for SLS, a heavy-lift rocket that will provide an entirely new capability for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit.

An International Launch Services Proton M launch vehicle has successfully injected the 6,000-kg SES-5 (Sirius 5) spacecraft into geostationary transfer orbit. It was the sixth launch by a Proton in 2012 and the 378th Proton mission over the entire Proton flight history.
