The first Soyuz to take off from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana is now at its launch pad. NASA, the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and the U.S. Air Force signed an agreement this week to establish clear criteria for certification of commercial providers of launch vehicles used for national security space and civil space missions.

In parallel to the final preparations for Soyuz’ milestone maiden flight from French Guiana on 20 October with a payload of two Galileo navigation satellites, the second launch campaign has now begun for a December mission with six spacecraft that will perform governmental and civilian Earth observation duties, as well as military electronic intelligence-gathering.

The Launch Authorisation Board (LAB) for the PSLV-C18/Megha-Tropiques mission, which met on 9 October 2011 at Satish Dhawan Space Centre(SDSC) – SHAR, Sriharikota has cleared the launch of PSLV-C18 at 0530 UTC on 12 October 2011.

Preparations continue for Soyuz’ maiden flight from French Guiana on 20 October.
