NASA has issued a request for proposal for the Ares V rocket that will perform heavy lift and cargo functions as part of the next generation of spacecraft that will return humans to the moon, the agency said.

Rocket: Proton M/Block DM; Payload three Uragan M (GLONASS M) navigation satellites; Date: 25 December 2008, 1043 UTC; Site: Baikonur, Kazakhstan. The spacecraft, likely to be designated Kosmos 2447 through 2449, were successfully delivered to target orbit.

Rocket: Chang Zheng 3A; Payload: Fengyun 2-06 (Fengyun 2-E); Date: 23 December 2008, 0054 UTC; Site: Xichang launch centre, China. The weather satellite entered the preset geostationary transfer orbit 24 minutes after lift-off.

International Launch Services (ILS) and Eutelsat Communications S.A. have set a first quarter 2009 launch date for the W2A satellite, which will be the 50th commercial Proton launch for ILS as well as its first mission of the new year.
