Astrium has been awarded two contracts from the Russian Satellite Communications Company (RSCC) for the delivery of two telecommunication satellites Ekspress AM4R and Ekspress AM7. Astrium will build the satellites based on the Eurostar E3000 platform and Khrunichev-built Proton launchers will deliver them to orbit in 2014.

Meteor 1-1, the Soviet Union’s first fully operational weather satellite, fell in Antarctica on 26 March after more than four decades in orbit, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

AMPAC-ISP Corp., American Pacific Corporation’s wholly-owned in-space propulsion subsidiary, reported that ISP and Orbital Sciences Corporation have successfully completed the Pre-Ship Review for the Hydrazine Propulsion Module (HPM) for the Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) satellite, a collaboration between NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and the 8th in the Landsat series.

Engineers at EADS Astrium have de-orbited the 5,700-kg Russian Ekspress AM4 down on 25 March in a targeted re-entry. The Metop-B satellite has successfully passed its health check confirming it is functioning well following the transport to launch site.

Researchers from SRI International and the University of Michigan have taken the first-ever measurement of naturally occurring auroral turbulence recorded using a nanosatellite radar receiver. The research was done with support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA’s Educational Launch of Nanosatellites (ELaNa) Initiative.
