NASA’s Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) has passed its most significant mission milestone to date, the Mission Critical Design Review, or MCDR. NASA is seeking proposals for small satellite payloads to fly on rockets planned to launch between 2012 and 2014. COM DEV International Ltd. announced that it has received an Authorisation to Proceed to provide equipment for two new commercial satellites.

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft, the first ever to orbit an object in the main asteroid belt, is spiralling towards its first of four intensive science orbits. That initial orbit of the rocky world Vesta begins on 11 August, at an altitude of 2,700 kilometers and will provide in-depth analysis of the asteroid.

The U.S. Air Force’s second Space Based Infrared Systems geosynchronous satellite successfully completed a Baseline Integrated System Test recently at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company in Sunnyvale, California.
