Final preparations are under way for the launch of the international Aquarius/SAC-D observatory on 9 June between 1420 and 1425 UTC. The mission’s primary instrument, Aquarius, will study interactions between ocean circulation, the water cycle and climate by measuring ocean surface salinity.

Eutelsat confirmed it has leased a Chinese satellite, apparently in order to save the reservation for an orbital slot that would otherwise have expired next month.

NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) aeroshell and cruise stage were delivered to Kennedy Space Center yesterday. Lockheed Martin built the aeroshell and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory built the cruise stage.

Northrop Grumman Corporation and Applied Minds, LLC announced the success of a recent launch and orbit of a test microsatellite dubbed Mayflower. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft has obtained its first image of the giant asteroid Vesta, which will help fine-tune navigation during its approach. Dawn expects to achieve orbit around Vesta on 16 July, when the asteroid is about 187 million km from Earth.
