Lockheed Martin has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation of Japan to build its next geostationary communications satellite. Designated JCSAT-13, the satellite will be launched aboard an Ariane 5 in 2013.

The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) mission is now operating on its redundant laser, which was designed as a contingency in case of a problem with the primary laser.

Boeing announced that it has shipped the IndoStar II/ProtoStar II satellite from the company’s satellite manufacturing facility in El Segundo to the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch facility in Kazakhstan.

The crash of Kosmos 2251 and Iridium 33 on 10 February has created at least 823 larger parts of debris – and much more smaller ones, NASA reports in its latest Orbital Debris Quarterly News.
