Uncertain future for Orbcomm’s OG 2 after botched deployment

Orbcomm Inc. confirmed that the company’s OG 2 satellite was deployed in a lower-than-planned orbit by the recently launched Falcon 9. As it turned out, the problem was a side-effect of the engine failure that occurred on the rocket’s first stage earlier into the flight.

Eutelsat 21B arrives in Kourou, readies for Ariane launch on 9 November

The Eutelsat 21B (f.k.a. W6A) satellite of Eutelsat Communications has arrived in Kourou, French Guiana, and is now being prepared for launch on 9 November by Arianespace on board an Ariane 5 rocket (Flight VA210). Lift-off is planned from 2105 UTC at the beginning of a launch window lasting 106 minutes.

Sea Launch receives vehicle for Eutelsat 70B mission

The Ocean Force sea-based transport vessel carrying the Zenit-2S launch vehicle and Block-DM-SL upper stage designated for the Eutelsat 70B (f.k.a. W5A) mission departed the port at Oktyabrsky, Ukraine, on 14 August 2012 and arrived pier-side at Sea Launch’s Home Port facility in Long Beach, California on 19 September 2012.

Galileo satellites cleared for launch

Europe’s next two Galileo satellites have received technical clearance for their launch this Friday. They are currently resting in place atop their Soyuz launcher.

ATK awarded SLS Advanced Concept Booster Development contract

ATK announced that NASA has awarded the company a US$50 million contract to complete engineering development and risk reduction tests as part of the Advanced Concept Booster Development for the Space Launch System (SLS).

GeoEye 2 progresses while Ikonos achieves 13 years of operation

Lockheed Martin said it is making steady progress in a key test phase on GeoEye’s next-generation, high-resolution imaging satellite, GeoEye-2, as Ikonos, the world’s first commercial remote sensing spacecraft marks 13 years of service.
