According to Northrop Grumman, the first of two Defense Weather Satellite System (DWSS) spacecraft is being developed and verified using the Electrical Engineering Model Testbed to conduct the Satellite Integration and Test (I&T) processes much earlier than usual. Risk is reduced sooner rather than later in the I&T phase when satellite development is much further along and delays are more costly, the company said.

Harris Corporation successfully completed a two-day Preliminary Design Review for a synthetic aperture radar satellite payload. The review is a key milestone that confirms the Harris design approach is consistent with the customer’s technical requirements, allowing the payload team to transition into the detailed design phase of the programme.

Boeing shipped its fourth Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellite to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station to undergo final preparations for a scheduled January launch. NASA’s new Mars rover, Curiosity, will be launched on 25 November from Cape Canaveral in Florida on an Atlas V rocket. Northrop Grumman Corporation and its teammate ITT Exelis have finished installation of the giant structural steel frame used to assemble the mirrors and instruments of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Harris Corporation was awarded a five-year, US$25 million contract by the U.S. Air Force Space Command Space and Missile Systems Center to sustain the ground system for the Defense Meteorological Satellites Program. The contract includes one base year and four one-year options.
