NASA’s decommissioned Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) fell back to Earth between 0323 and 0509 UTC on Saturday, 24 September, 20 years and nine days after its launch on a 14-year mission that produced some of the first long-term records of chemicals in the atmosphere. Lockheed Martin has completed building the primary structure of NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft at its Space Systems company facility near Denver. The Space Data Association (SDA), established by commercial satellite operators to improve the safety and efficiency of space operations, announced that the Full Operational Capability (FOC) analysis system in the SDA’s Space Data Center has successfully met SDA objectives to become operational on 15 September 2011.

China’s second moon orbiter Chang’e-2 has sent back the first batch of data while orbiting the second Lagrange Point (L2) about 1.7 million km away from Earth.

Russian Space Communications Company (RSCC) plans to launch six satellites before 2013, according to the acting head of the Russian Federal Communications Agency Sergei Malyanov.

The Russian Satellite Communications company (Kosmicheskaya Svyaz, RSCC) plans to sign contracts before the end of the year to build three telecommunications satellites, RSCC General Director Yury Prokhorov said.

The U.S. Department of Defense’s Operationally Responsive Space-1 (ORS-1) satellite was declared fully operational on 16 September by the U.S. Air Force Space Command at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado following successful on-orbit deployment and checkout of all systems.
