The U.S. Air Force and Lockheed Martin team has delivered the first geosynchronous (GEO-1) Space Based Infrared System (SBIRS) spacecraft to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where it will be prepared for an early May lift-off a board a United Launch Alliance Atlas V launch vehicle.

ESA’s GOCE satellite has reached its goal of mapping Earth’s gravity with unprecedented precision. In two short years, the satellite has collected the measurements needed to record the ‘geoid’ reference shape of our planet.

Telesat announced that it has concluded an agreement with Loral Space & Communications Inc. to acquire the Canadian payload of the ViaSat-1 satellite.

Harris Corporation has been awarded a contract from Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems to build Ka-band antennas for three Inmarsat-5 satellites.

NASA’s Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III-ISS (SAGE III-ISS) has recently started testing after nine years in a clean room. The instrument is scheduled for launch in 2014 on a SpaceX rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

ESA has selected four candidates for a medium-class mission that will launch in the period 2020-22. The candidates cover very different areas of scientific research, ranging from investigations of black holes and general relativity to near-Earth asteroid sample return and studies of planets orbiting distant stars.

The defunct German X-ray satellite ROSAT is expected to crash back to Earth some time between October and December 2011. According to the German Aerospace Center (DLR), there’s a chance the spacecraft will not burn up completely when re-entering Earth’s atmosphere.
