The Swedish Prisma satellites recently began testing their micropropulsion thrusters. The satellites’ manufacturer Swedish Space Corporation said that the experiment yielded good and bad news.

Boeing announced it has received a contract from Intelsat to provide a second ultra-high frequency (UHF) hosted payload on another of the four commercial communications satellites that Intelsat ordered from Boeing last year.

Boeing confirmed that the U.S. Air Force has authorised US$182 million for the company to begin work on the seventh Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellite, which is being procured under the new WGS Block II follow-on contract.

The U.S. Air Force’s Space and Missile System Center’s Space Based Infrared Systems Wing and Lockheed Martin held a successful critical design review for the third and fourth geosynchronous satellites planned under the SBIRS Follow-On Production contract.

The U.S. National Research Council (NRC) has strongly recommended the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) as one of NASA’s next two major space missions, to start in 2016 in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). LISA will study the universe in a manner different from any other space observatory, by observing gravitational waves.

The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) said it is re-focusing its System F6 (Future, Fast, Flexible, Fractionated, Free-Flying Spacecraft United by Information Exchange) fractionated spacecraft demonstrator programme to emphasise development of an open and ubiquitous space architecture and an associated set of open standards.
