The biggest window ever launched to space has been installed in its final position on the Earth-facing port of the International Space Station’s Node-3. The latches and 16 electrically driven bolts were engaged today at 0631 UTC. Opening of the window shutters is foreseen for Wednesday.

Aerojet said it played a key role in the positioning of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite, which was launched aboard an Atlas V on 11 February.

As preparations for the launch of ESA’s CryoSat-2 mission on 25 February continue on schedule, an important milestone has been reached with the satellite’s encapsulation in the rocket’s “space head module”.

Measuring an orbiting satellite’s remaining fuel is a well-known problem. Nanospace, Sweden, which since 2007 has been working on a system that would solve this problem, has now been awarded a EUR2 million contract by ESA.

Brazil and China will postpone the launch of their fourth joint satellite from 2010 to mid-2011, a Brazilian official was quoted as saying.

Thales Alenia Space announced that it has signed a contract with the French and Italian space agencies, CNES and ASI, to develop, construct, test and deliver in orbit a broadband civil and military telecommunications satellite, Athena-Fidus.

The Astra 3B communications satellite for SES Astra arrived today in French Guiana, transported by an Antonov aircraft from Astrium’s Toulouse site, and will be prepared at the Kourou space centre for an Ariane 5 heavy-lift launch along with another Astrium satellite – SATCOMBw-2b for the German armed forces – at the end of March.
