Ten years ago: XMM-Newton launched

The Astrium-built XMM-Newton X-ray observatory has reached its 10 years mark in space. On 10 December 1999, an Ariane 5 rocket launched the research satellite into space.

Symposium to discuss role of smallsats in a knowledge-based society

They originated as purely experimental devices, but small satellites are now taking on a growing number of operational roles alongside their full-sized counterparts, ESA said. A conference next year will discuss how the evolution of small satellites is spurring a radical increase in data availability and knowledge-based services.

Landsat Data Continuity Mission spacecraft passes critical design review

General Dynamics Advanced Information Systems successfully completed the Critical Design Review (CDR) for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) spacecraft which is scheduled for launch in December 2012.

HELIOS 2B pre-launch details

Arianespace has rolled out its seventh Ariane 5 for launch in 2009, preparing the final mission of this year for a lift-off on 9 December, 1626 UTC at the Spaceport in French Guiana.

WGS-3 functions normally after launch

Boeing said it has acquired the first on-orbit signals from the third of six Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) satellites. The signals indicate that the spacecraft is healthy and ready to begin orbital manoeuvres and operational testing.

SSTL delivers GPS receivers for Orbcomm’s new OG2 satellites

Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) has delivered eighteen SGR-10 GPS receivers to Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) of the USA to provide on-board orbit determination for the Orbcomm Generation 2 (OG2) satellites.

OHB to build eight Galileo satellites – sources

OHB Technology has won a contract to build eight Galileo satellites, according to sources close to the European Commission. The Commission had said earlier it would order a total of 22 spacecraft before the end of 2009. However, there’s no word on the other 14 satellites yet.
