Astrium has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to undertake initial development studies for a Next Generation Launcher (NGL) for future satellite launches. This 15 month project has a total contractual value of EUR8.5 million, of which Astrium will contribute EUR1.5 million of its own funds.

The launch of the Space-Based Space Surveillance (SBSS) spacecraft planned for 8 July has been delayed pending resolution of a test anomaly associated with another Minotaur IV launch vehicle undergoing test in the factory.

Iran has announced yet another satellite. Telecommunication Minister Reza Taghipour said the country would launch a spacecraft called Rasad 1 (“Observation”) in the last week of August.

The Swedish Prisma satellites had to perform a collision avoidance manoeuvre to prevent a collision with a piece of space junk. The object is one of numerous debris items resulting from the collision between an Iridium satellite and the Kosmos 2251 satellite last year.

The Venus Climate Orbiter “Akatsuki,” which was launched on 20 May 2010 (UTC), turned on its 500-N orbital manoeuvring engine (OME) on 28 June at a distance of 14.6 million km from the Earth.
