Atlas V to loft astronauts?

The NASTAR Center, a commercial space training and research centre, has completed the initial phase of a research effort focused on commercial human spaceflight and systems development related to emergency detection and response using an Atlas V flight profile, under a contract with Special Aerospace Service (SAS).

Japanese spy satellite has power problem

Japan’s IGS 4B radar reconnaissance satellite stopped working on 23 August, the country’s government announced.

Plan B for AEHF 1 orbit-raising manoeuvres implemented

Operations have begun to salvage the U.S. Air Force’s AEHF 1 satellite, which got stuck in its supersynchronous transfer orbit after a successful launch on 14 August.

ICESat deorbited

NASA’s Orbital Debris Program Office at Johnson Space Center, Houston, has reported that debris from the ICESat spacecraft fell to Earth in the Barents Sea on 30 August at approximately 0900 UTC.

First GPS IIF satellite enters service with U.S. Air Force

Boeing announced that the first of 12 Global Positioning System (GPS) IIF satellites the company is building for the U.S. Air Force has entered service.

First JWST primary mirror segment undergoes final coating

A primary mirror segment of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has completed the final step in the manufacturing process. It is the first of the telescope’s primary mirror segments to achieve this milestone. Northrop Grumman Corporation is leading the telescope’s design and development effort for the space agency’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
