Satellite TV is not exactly a new source of home entertainment – it has been in use for a pretty long time by now. However, it is only recently that satellite service has seen a sharp rise in popularity. Unlike in the past, satellite service is now a strong competitor for cable TV in both urban and rural markets (previously, it was mostly rural residents who used satellite service).

In recent years, there has been a surge in the number of new satellite TV subscriptions, as more and more people have been getting fed up with their cable service and looking for something better. Many former cable users blame skyrocketing monthly cable fees for their abandoning their old providers and switching to satellite service.

A Rokot launch vehicle lifted off at the Plesetsk Launch Base on 26 August 2005 to place the Monitor E Earth observation small satellite in orbit. This experimental small EO spacecraft was the first built by Khrunichev. The 750-kg satellite is designed to support studies of Earth’s resources from a 540-km orbit.

Television started life as an entertainment medium. However since then it has matured and is now also regarded as means of developing a viewer’s education. Many subjects in the form of documentaries are incorporated in dedicated channels that show programs devoted to a particular subject. Because of the superior transmission qualities of satellite TV, this form of television is best adapted to showing those programs that rely on visual content.
