International Launch Services (ILS) announced a new contract for launch of the MEXSAT-1 satellite on an ILS Proton for the Mexican government’s Ministry of Communications and Transportation, the Secretaria de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT).

Metop-B, which is due to be launched on 23 May, safely arrived at its launch site this week. The polar-orbiting satellite was transported to the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in an Antonov cargo plane, after being shipped from the Astrium factory in Toulouse, France.

The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter HEALY (WAGB 20) successfully experimented with NRL’s TacSat-4 communications satellite by communicating from the Bering Sea off the western coast of Alaska to Coast Guard Island, Alameda, California.

The World Teleport Association has released the second annual Satellite Operator Benchmarks report, which covers interviews with over 80 teleport executives around the world who rated the commercial and operational practices of the major satellite operators. The Sun erupted with one of the largest solar flares of this solar cycle on 7 March (UTC). This flare was categorised as an X5.4, making it the second largest flare — after an X6.9 on 9 August 2011 — since the Sun’s activity segued into a period of relatively low activity called solar minimum in early 2007.
