SES books three more SpaceX launches

Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) and SES announced an agreement to launch three additional SES satellites, on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 or Falcon Heavy rockets.

Proton Failure Review Oversight Board concludes investigation

The Failure Review Oversight Board (FROB) concluded the review of the Russian State Commission report on 11 September concerning the root cause of the Russian Federal Telkom-3/Ekspress MD-2 mission failure which occurred on 7 August.

HTV-3 released for disposal over Pacific

The Japanese HTV-3 cargo craft was unberthed from the International Space Station. The vessel, filled with trash, will descend into the atmosphere and burn up over the Pacific Ocean.

Lockheed Martin begins final assembly of NASA’s MAVEN spacecraft

Lockheed Martin has begun the assembly, test and launch operations (ATLO) phase for NASA’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. MAVEN is scheduled to launch in November 2013 and will be the first mission devoted to understanding the Martian upper atmosphere.

European industry develops space safety radar

ESA said it will boost European industrial expertise by developing a new radar as part of the Agency’s Space Situational Awareness programme. The radar will test future debris monitoring techniques, helping European satellite operators avoid space hazards and increase safety in Earth orbit.

Russia to develop space debris warning and removal system

Roskosmos is planning to develop a system to remove hazardous debris from orbit, the agency’s Deputy Chief Sergei Savelyev was quoted as saying.

EADS, BAE Systems confirm talks

New company plans space-based commercial laser communications network

Laser Light Communications, LLC was launched on 11 September at the World Satellite Finance Forum in Paris, France. Laser Light intends on deploying and operating what it believes to be the World’s first commercial satellite communications constellation based entirely on optical wave technology.
