7,000 small satellites to be launched over coming decade

According to Euroconsult’s latest report, Prospects for the Small Satellite Market, a significant expansion is underway in the smallsat market, both in terms of demand and systems’ capabilities. About 7,000 smallsats are due to be launched over the next ten years, i.e. a six-fold increase from the 1,200 units launched over the past decade. About 50 constellations, two of which are mega constellations, account for over 80% of the smallsat count.

According to Frost & Sullivan’s recent analysis, Small-satellite Launch Services Market Quarterly Update Q2 2018, launch demand is expected to increase to 11,740 small-satellites by 2030 with revenues reaching US$70.10 billion. Commercial players will offer and enable real-time imagery, digital transformation, and seamless global connectivity.

Fourth AEHF satellite ships for launch

Lockheed Martin recently shipped the fourth Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) military communications satellite to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, where it will be prepared for an October lift-off aboard an Atlas V rocket.

JAXA’s SLIM launch now expected in FY 2021

JAXA plans to launch a small lunar landing probe on an H-2A rocket in fiscal 2021. The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, or SLIM, will be launched together with a successor model of the X-ray astronomy satellite Hitomi and will target a landing on a small crater in Mare Nectaris.
