Total loss of NRO-L21 highlights U.S. spy satellite problems

The U.S. National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has given up attempts to contact an experimental military satellite launched last December, Reuters reported citing unnamed defence officials. In addition, the NRO Director has recommended scrapping two multibillion-dollar spy satellite programmes.

Failure of Metop-A’s primary AHRPT is permanent

Since the Metop-A anomaly observed on 4 July 2007 when the AHRPT transmitter autonomously switched off, investigations with Astrium and ESA/ESTEC remained focussed on the status of the failed AHRPT sub-system, EUMETSAT said.

MetOp-A ceases direct high-res picture transmission

The Advanced High Resolution Picture Transmission (AHRPT) service aboard the polar orbiting MetOp-A weather satellite stopped on 4 July and could not be restarted yet, operator EUMETSAT said today.
