During a review of space shuttle Discovery’s readiness for flight, NASA managers decided on 20 February that more data and possible testing are required before launching the STS-119 mission to the International Space Station.

The European-built Herschel telescope has begun pre-launch processing at the Spaceport in French Guiana as preparations for Arianespace’s second Ariane 5 launch of 2009 shift into full gear.

NASA has again postponed the launch of the space shuttle Discoveryon the STS-119 mission, saying it will not occur before 27 February.

Rocket: Ariane 5 ECA; Payload: Hotbird 10, NSS-9, two Spirale satellites; Date: 12 February 2009, 2209 UTC; Site: Kourou, French Guiana. After an on-time lift-off, the launcher deployed Hotbird 10 for Eutelsat, followed by NSS-9 for SES New Skies. Two small Spirale auxiliary payloads for the French DGA defence procurement agency were then injected into orbit to complete the 34-minute mission.

Rocket: Proton M/Briz M; Payload: Ekspress-AM44, Ekspress-MD1; Date: 11 February 2009, 0003 UTC; Site: Baikonur, Kazakhstan. The satellites were successfully delivered into geosynchronous drift orbit.

Because of an ongoing review of the space shuttle’s flow control valves, NASA managers have rescheduled meetings this week to assess the launch readiness of shuttle Discovery’s STS-119 mission to the International Space Station.
