Iridium said it has completed the preliminary design review for its new satellite system, Iridium NEXT, the first major milestone in a five-year development schedule. The company is still on track to begin deploying Iridium NEXT in early 2015.

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) – R Series Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) spaceflight instrument Engineering Development Unit completed optical-electronic lightning sensitivity testing in January at the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto and showed excellent performance, the company said.

MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging) successfully completed an orbit-correction manoeuvre to lower its periapsis altitude – the lowest point of Messenger’s orbit about Mercury relative to the planet’s surface – from 405 to 200 kilometers.

Lockheed Martin announced the successful completion of on-orbit testing for the first Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) military communications space vehicle (SV-1).
