An International Launch Services Proton M/Briz M is to launch Intelsat-16 directly into geostationary orbit on 12 February. The launch window opens at 0039 UTC. It will be the first ILS/Proton launch in 2010.

Europe’s series of Meteosat satellites has been improving the accuracy of weather forecasts for over 30 years. Meteosat-6 has recently broken the record for the operational life of one of these robust missions – but its days are numbered.

Taiwan’s National Space Organisation (NSPO) announced the formation of a group specifically for researching, developing and manufacturing an optical remote sensing instrument to fly on FormoSat 5, the country’s next Earth-observation satellite to be launched in 2013.

The James Webb Space Telescope’s sunshield has passed its critical design review, certifying that its design is complete and meets mission requirements. By achieving thermal, deployment and stray-light targets, the sunshield is now ready for manufacturing.
