NASA has selected the design of a new Space Launch System. The booster will be the United States’ most powerful since the Saturn V rocket that carried Apollo astronauts to the moon.

Scheduled for launch on 20 September, the Arabsat 5C satellite, for which Astrium is co-prime, has been fully fuelled and integrated with the Ariane 5 launch vehicle at the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. The flight had been rescheduled following supplementary checks performed on the Ariane 5′s cryogenic upper stage.

Thales Alenia Space has shipped the second Galileo satellite flight model to Europe’s launch base in French Guiana. There they will undergo a final test campaign prior to a launch by Arianespace. lift-off, on a Soyuz vehicle, is scheduled on 20 October with both satellites.

NASA, on behalf of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has awarded a sole source letter contract to Northrop Grumman Systems Corp. for the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) instrument planned for flight on the first Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS-1).
