Ariane 5 launches U.S. Internet and European weather satellites

Rocket: Ariane 5 ECA; Payload: EchoStar XVII (aka Jupiter), MSG-3 (Meteosat 10); Date: 5 July 2012, 2136 UTC; Launch Site: Kourou, French Guyana. For this third Ariane 5 mission of 2012, the satellites were deployed into geostationary transfer orbit during a 34-minute flight.

Hispasat makes first transmissions of next-gen 3D TV

Hispasat has made the world’s first demonstration of the JEDI (Just Explore DImensions) television channel in 3D compatible with the MVC (Multiview Video Coding) format. With this format, it is possible to transmit the same content in HD (high definition) and 3D Full HD on the same signal.

Pike research: satellite communications market for smart grid applications to grow

According to a new report from Pike Research, revenue from satellite services and equipment for smart grid applications will reach US$368 million by 2020, increasing from just under US$67 million in 2012.
