Engineers assess reaction wheel on NASA’s Dawn spacecraft

Engineers are studying the reaction wheels on NASA’s Dawn spacecraft after automatic sensors detected excess friction building up in one of them and powered it off early on the morning of 17 June 2010.

South Korea, Russia blame each other for KSLV-1 failure

“[T]he real mess hasn’t even begun,” the Korea Times notes after the botched KSLV-1 (Naro-1) launch, predicting “an ugly finger-pointing battle” between South Korean and Russian officials. At least the number of theories that try to explain the rocket’s malfunction 137 seconds after lift-off is growing by the hour.

Ekspress-AM1 to continue operations for the time being

Russian Satellite Communications Company is not planning to take the partially defunct Ekspress-AM1 satellite out of service or move it to a different orbital slot, Intersputnik said.

Two-pronged approach to thwart the attack of the Zombie Satellite

SES World Skies announced plans for an intricate set of orbital manoeuvres later this month aimed at steering its AMC-11 satellite and its customers clear of interference from Intelsat’s troubled Galaxy 15 spacecraft, referred to in recent media coverage as the “Zombie” satellite.

Galaxy 15 turns into special zombie satellite

Intelsat’s Galaxy 15, which on 5 April stopped responding to commands, has started drifting eastward. Satellite operators have over the past few years become accustomed to such incidences, in which geostationary satellites fail and start drifting. However, this case is slightly different as Galaxy 15’s transponders still work.

Contact lost with Hypersonic Technology Vehicle after deployment

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) said it launched its Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) on 22 April at 2300 UTC from Vandenberg Air Force Base but lost contact with the vehicle shortly after it was deployed.
