Chinas launches new navigation satellite

Rocket: Chang Zheng 3C; Payload: Beidou-2 Compass-G1 (Beidou-G1?); Date: 16 January 2010, 1612 UTC; Launch site: Xichang Space Centre, China. The satellite was deployed into geostationary transfer orbit 10 hours later.

Baikonur launches in February

Russia will launch two satellites as well as a cargo ship to the International Space Station (ISS) next month from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the Federal Space Agency said.

Manufacturing of Luch-5A has begun

JSC Academician M.F. Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems has commenced manufacturing the Luch-5A (Loutch-5A) data relay satellite.

GOES-P being processed in Florida

During the first three weeks in January, the latest in the series of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites, GOES-P, is being processed and prepped for launch. Meanwhile, the first and second stages of the Delta IV rocket that will carry it into orbit are being assembled on the launch pad.

NSS-12 enters commercial service

SES World Skies announced that the NSS-12 satellite has entered commercial service at the orbital location of 57 degrees East. NSS-12 is the 41st spacecraft in SES’ global fleet.

First JWST mirror segment meets flight specs

The first primary mirror segment of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has met flight specifications at ambient temperatures, the result of a process that has been six years in the making.

Russian solar science satellite declared total loss

Attempts to revive Russia’s only scientific satellite, Koronas-Foton, have failed and the satellite can be considered lost, according to Yuriy Zaytsev, academic adviser at the Russian Academy of Engineering Sciences. The root cause appears to be a design flaw.

Galaxy Express industrial consortium to be liquidated

Japan’s IHI Corp. has decided to liquidate a joint venture for the development of the medium-size GX rocket following the government’s decision to scrap the public-private sector development project, sources close to the matter were quoted as saying.
