We are an information dependent society. Where we get our information from has developed and changed over the course of time. For much of the 20th century newspapers and radio stations served as the principal source for people to get the latest news and related information about current affairs locally, nationally and internationally. Then, in the 1990s, television rose to the top of the media playing field, with more people getting the news from their television screens than from any other source. And the television not only offers us news but it also offers us a whole lot of other valuable information as well entertainment-in sum, it is a medium that we just can’t do without at this point in the game. It used to be that the only option when it came to watching television was to tune in via rabbit ears, waiting for the local and national networks to tune in and tune out their programming each night. Switching channels used to consist of having to get up and turn a knob, and static after midnight was a common occurrence.

These days there is no purpose in subscribing to a television service if you don’t know exactly what you’re paying for and if, more importantly, it doesn’t meet your expectations or requirements/interests. Nonetheless, many people across the United States continue to pay for a subscription they are not particularly fond of, a truly sad state of affairs when you think about it.

Over the years many small or local post secondary institutions have begun to offer student housing. Whereas in the past it was far more common for students to commute to campus, and continue living with parents or relatives while studying, the average small school today has been around long enough to form an area of specialization.

Because so many people think that television is just a way to rot your brain, it can definitely be a little bit more difficult for parents to find the right balance between actually engaging and educational programming and the regular fare of boring and mindless cartoons peppered with endless advertisements. Except nowadays with even more channels, some devoted entirely to intelligent programming, it is possible to personally decide upon hours and hours of actually informative and educational programming.

Does a quiet night in with the television have you wondering “what are they thinking?” If you are checking out the range of programming available on the average cable lineups prime time channels and wondering how on earth it’s come to the low quality shows people today love, you’re probably not alone. Somehow, Hollywood and the major television studios have been slowly thinning out the availability of high quality programming to much chagrin, but even more cheers.

Out of all of the things that mom warned you about, two always seemed to come up more often than the others: don’t watch too much television and don’t sit too close to the screen. Of course, your mom was right, considering that most of the programming could easily turn your brain into mush and cause your vision to blur – high definition televisions were not as prevalent now as they were back then.
