Rocket: Ariane 5GS; Payload: Helios 2B; Date: 18 December 2009, 1626 UTC; Launch Site: Kourou, French Guiana. Following a flight lasting 59 minutes and 20 seconds, the Ariane 5 injected Helios 2B into its targeted Sun-synchronous polar orbit.

ESA’s Council has given the go-ahead to proceed with the implementation of the ExoMars Programme. This decision paves the way for two Mars exploration missions in co-operation with NASA in 2016 and 2018.

Boeing announced that GOES-14 (formerly GOES-O), the second satellite in a series of Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites built by Boeing for NASA and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), has completed on-orbit testing and been accepted into service.
