Nigerian-built satellite acquires first image

The Nigerian-built satellite, NigeriaSat-X, has acquired its first satellite image just three days after the successful launch on 17 August.

Soyuz grounded after Progress launch failure

Russia has grounded its Soyuz rockets after the Progress M-12M launch failure. Roskosmos said it will set up a commission for quality control in the space industry after the loss of the Progress spacecraft.

NASA moon mission in final preparations for September launch

NASA’s Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL), mission to study the moon is in final launch preparations for a scheduled launch on September onboard a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Raytheon ground system passes test for polar orbiting satellite

The Raytheon Company developed Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Common Ground System achieved a major milestone on the road to NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP) launch with the successful completion of the NPP Compatibility Test 4 this August. This is the last major comprehensive test prior to the scheduled October launch.

Proba-2 fuel tank refilled from ‘solid gas’

An influx of nitrogen has replenished the fuel tank of ESA’s Proba-2 microsatellite. This may not sound like a whole new space technology, but it is: the gas was not stored in a pressurised state but produced from a solid material at room temperature.

Thales Alenia Space’s Cygnus PCM shipped to United States

Thales Alenia Space has shipped its first Pressurised Cargo Module, designed to transport cargo to the International Space Station, to NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The PCM, developed on behalf of Cygnus prime contractor Orbital Sciences Corporation, was carried by an Antonov An-24 cargo plane.

Progress vessel makes it to Siberia, not space

The launch of a Progress cargo vessel to the International Space Station has become the latest failure in a string of recent Russian rocket mishaps. The unmanned cargo vessel crashed down in Siberia after an emergency shutdown of the Soyuz-U launcher’s upper stage. No casualties have been reported so far.

NASA and ATK full-scale solid rocket motor test set for 8 September

NASA and Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK) will conduct a full-scale test of a five-segment, solid rocket motor at the ATK Aerospace Systems test facility in Promontory, Utah, on 8 September.
