On 11 December, the James Webb Space Telescope was placed on top of the Ariane 5 rocket that will launch it to space from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana on 22 December.

Proton-M launches two Ekspress satellites (part I)

Rocket: Proton M/Briz M; Payload: Ekspress AMU3, Ekspress AMU7; Date: 13 December 2021, 1207 UTC; Launch site: Baikonur, Kazakhstan. The Russian Proton-M rocket lifted off with two Ekspress telecoms satellites from the Baikonur spaceport as normal and its Briz-M booster activated its thrusters successfully.

Rocket Lab launches 109th satellite to orbit

Rocket: Electron; Payload: two BlackSky satellites; Date: 9 December 2021, 0002 UTC; Launch site: Mahia Peninsula, New Zealand. Electron successfully delivered the two BlackSky Gen-2 Earth-imaging satellites to a circular 430 km orbit.

First Vega-C rocket stages reach Europe’s Spaceport

The first elements of ESA’s new-generation Vega-C launch vehicle have reached Europe’s Spaceport (aka Centre Spatial Guyanais; CSG) in French Guiana.

400th Chang Zheng rocket lofts classified satellites

Rocket: Chang Zheng 4B; Payload: two Shijian-6 05 satellites; Date: 10 December 2021, 0011 UTC; Launch site: Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, China. State media said the satellites will be used for space exploration and new technology tests.

NASA’s IXPE observatory launched

Rocket: Falcon 9; Payload; IXPE; Date: 8 December 2021, 2000 UTC; Launch site: Kennedy Space Center, USA. The rocket performed as expected, with spacecraft separation taking place 33 minutes into flight.

Spire Global, Inc. selects Virgin Orbit for late-load addition

Virgin Orbit has announced alongside space-based data and analytics provider Spire Global that they have received waiver approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority to include Spire on Virgin Orbit’s upcoming launch.

Orbex begins construction of new rocket launchpad in the UK

Orbex announced it has started construction of its first launch platform, the first orbital space launchpad to be built in the UK for more than half a century.
