First Galileo test satellite launched four years ago

The GIOVE-A satellite – the first step in Europe’s Galileo satellite navigation programme – was launched on 28 December 2005. The 660 kg spacecraft was built by Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd (SSTL) for ESA in just 30 months at a cost of just EUR28 million.
