Did you know that, numbering nearly 50 million people, Spanish speakers account for almost 40 percent of the population of the United States? This means that more people speak Spanish in this country than in any Central or South American country or Spain. In fact, the only other place in the world where there are more Spanish speakers than in the U.S. is Mexico. In addition to the many Americans for whom Spanish is their first language, there are 6 million Spanish students here, as well. Whether you or your family is from another country originally, or you took a few classes in high school or college, or you simply walked down the street, you no doubt have some experience with this language.
