Work on Ariane 6 to begin with demo projects

CNES and Snecma have signed a contract worth EUR7.6 million for work on Europe’s next generation rocket-launcher, Ariane 6.

Astra 5B to fly on Ariane 5 in mid-2013

SES confirmed that it has chosen Arianespace as primary launch provider for its Astra 5B satellite, within the scope of the “Multi Launch Agreement” between the two companies. The launch is planned for mid-year 2013.

Globalstar’s next six satellites scheduled for launch in July

Globalstar, Inc. announced that the second launch of six new Globalstar satellites is scheduled for 11 July 2011 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

New Galileo contracts leave money for six more satellites

Thales Alenia Space has signed a contract with ESA for the development and deployment of the ground-based Galileo Mission Segment (GMS) and the Galileo Security Facility (GSF). This contract, amounting EUR281 million, will cover almost four years of activity including maintenance. Separately, Astrium has been selected by as prime contractor for the Galileo Full Operational Capability Ground Control Segment. The contract value is EUR73.5 million. In addition, European Commission Vice President Antonio Tajani said there was now sufficient money left to order six additional Galileo satellites.

Aerojet offers XENITH propulsion system

Aerojet, QinetiQ and EADS Astrium Crisa announced that the companies have entered into a joint agreement to supply the XENITH (Xenon Ion Thruster) ion propulsion system to the commercial spacecraft market.

JWST completes first round of cryogenic mirror test

The first six of 18 segments that will form NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’s primary mirror for space observations completed final cryogenic testing this week.

Michibiki begins providing positioning signals

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said that GPS supplementary signals broadcast by the agency’s First Quasi-Zenith Satellite (QZS) “Michibiki” can now be used for navigation purposes.
