First Ariane 5 launch of 2021 successful

Rocket: Ariane 5 ESC-D; Payload: Eutelsat QUANTUM, Star One D2; Date: 29 July 2021, 2100 UTC; Launch site: Kourou, French Guiana. The satellites were deployed into geostationary transfer orbit.

Porsche SE invests in rocket technology start-up Isar Aerospace

Porsche Automobil Holding SE, Stuttgart, acquires a low single-digit percentage stake in Isar Aerospace Technologies GmbH, Ottobrunn. The company develops and manufactures launch vehicles for the transport of satellites. The investment was part of a new financing round of Isar Aerospace.

Inmarsat unveils GEO/LEO communications network ‘ORCHESTRA’

Inmarsat has unveiled plans for ORCHESTRA, a communications network that is to bring together existing geosynchronous (GEO) satellites with low Earth orbit satellites (LEO) and terrestrial 5G into an integrated, high-performance solution.

Ball Aerospace completes PDR of NOAA’s Space Weather satellite

Ball Aerospace successfully completed the preliminary design review (PDR) for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) Space Weather Follow On-Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1) spacecraft. With PDR complete, the spacecraft now moves into the critical design phase.

Airbus completes integration of third Copernicus Sentinel-2

Airbus has finished the integration of the Copernicus Sentinel-2C satellite. It is the third of its kind and will now be shipped to Munich to undergo extensive environmental tests to prove its readiness for space. The test campaign will last until March 2022.

Nauka docks with ISS, causes attitude problem

Russia’s Nauka (“Science”) multi-purpose laboratory module docked to the nadir port of the Zvezda service module of the International Space Station (ISS). Just hours later, Nauka’s thrusters began firing unexpectedly, causing the outpost to lose attitude control. The situation has meanwhile been brought under control.

Rocket Lab successfully launches U.S. Space Force mission

Rocket: Electron; Payload: Monolith; Date: 29 July 2021, 0600 UTC; Launch site: Mahia Peninsula, New Zealand. The successful mission was Rocket Lab’s fourth launch for the year and its 21st Electron mission overall.

China launches final Tianhui I satellite

Rocket: Chang Zheng 2D; Payload: Tianhui I-04 (Tianhui 1D); Date: 29 July 2021, 0401 UTC; Launch site; Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, China. The satellite successfully entered the planned orbit.
